THE BIRDCATCHER’S TALE

THE BIRDCATCHER’S TALE

Nejuni had seven adults in her life: three aunties, three uncles, and the birdcatcher. The birdcatcher went into the jungle with her and brought back the most colorful girawas to sell on the market. Nejuni felt sad for the birds, but everyone needed to earn money. One day, they went very far into the forest and heard an eerie scream. A nightjar sat on the branches, and Nejuni begged not to take him. The birdcatcher didn’t listen and threw his net: but as the devil-bird screamed again, the birdcatcher dropped dead. Nejuni ran until she reached the village, then opened all other cages: and in a flurry of wings, the girawas vanished into the sky.
